What happens during your first dental visit?

Reviewing Your Dental History

We start by reviewing your medical and dental history, including medications, allergies, and past experiences. This helps us understand your overall health and any dental anxiety or concerns so we can support you properly.

Complete Oral Examination

A full exam is performed to check your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health, including screening for decay, gum disease, grinding, and other issues.

31_X Ray

Digital X-Rays

If needed, digital X-rays help us detect hidden problems safely and early. Recent records from another clinic may also be transferred.

Professional Cleaning

Depending on your needs, a cleaning may be done to remove plaque, tartar, and stains, improving gum health and freshness.

Personalized Treatment Discussion

After your exam, we explain our findings clearly and create a treatment plan based on your needs, comfort, and budget without pressure.

We Focus on Comfortable and Judgment-Free Care

For many people, booking a first dentist appointment is emotional. Some patients feel anxious about pain. Others worry they’ll be judged because they delayed care or avoided the dentist for years.

At Kawartha Dental Clinic, we want you to know this is a judgment-free zone!

Haven’t Been to the Dentist in Years?

If you’ve been putting off dental visits, you are far from alone. In fact, many people delay care because of busy schedules, anxiety, financial concerns, or simply not knowing where to start again. Sometimes one missed appointment turns into several years surprisingly quickly.

The important thing is this: you can always start fresh. When patients visit us after years away from the dentist, we focus on solutions, not lectures. We understand life happens, and we’re here to help you move forward.

Your first dental visit Peterborough is about rebuilding confidence in your oral health, one step at a time.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Please bring the following items:

Insurance card or insurance information

List of medications

Information about medical conditions or allergies

Previous dental records, if available

If you have insurance and dental visit coverage questions, our front desk team can verify your benefits before treatment begins. We also encourage patients to arrive a few minutes early so they can settle in comfortably before their appointment starts.

Dental Anxiety? We’re Here to Help

Dental anxiety is extremely common, and we never dismiss those feelings. You may feel mildly nervous or experience severe fear around dental appointments, but our team works hard to create a calmer experience from beginning to end.

You're in Good Hands

We explain the procedures step-by-step and check in with you frequently during treatments.

A Calmer Experience

Sometimes simply knowing what to expect at the dentist can make the experience feel far less stressful.

Sedation Options Available

Moreover, we offer sedation options if you need to relax before the treatment begins.

I had a wonderful experience at Kawartha Dental Clinic. Dr. Ed and his assistant Terry were fantastic, and Patrick the hygienist was excellent.

I tend to be quiet and don’t always voice my questions or concerns, but the team was thoughtful and perceptive. They paid attention, picked up on what I needed, and met me where I was—while remaining warm, upbeat, and professional. I felt genuinely seen and cared for throughout my visit.

One of the best dental experiences I’ve had. I’m actually looking forward to my next check-up.

Highly recommend.

Ed & Terry, Thank you all so very much for making my daughter’s recent visit at your office such a positive dental experience. The calm and professional manner of all combined with the sincere care and concern shown for my daughter washed away any apprehension she may have had regarding the procedure. Yous did and amazing job fixing her teeth and helping boost her confidence in the process!

Thank you from us both

I have been a patient at Kawartha Dental for 20 years, always had good experiences. Today I had my cleaning with Saria and it was one of my most comfortable, relaxing cleanings to date. Saria was extremely friendly and personable. It made the cleaning a very calm, comfortable experience and i look forward to my next cleaning with her. If you have anxiety about going to the dentist, I would recommend booking with her.
