Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

Here are the signs indicating that a tooth extraction may be the only way to restore your dental health:

15_Toothache

Persistent Tooth Pain

Ongoing or worsening pain can signal deep decay, infection, or nerve damage that may require treatment

10_Infection

Swelling or Infection

Swollen gums, facial swelling, or signs of infection should never be ignored, especially if accompanied by fever or throbbing pain.

Reminder: If you are experiencing a swollen tooth infection or significant discomfort, our clinic offers same-day emergency appointments whenever possible.

44_False Teeth

Loose Tooth

Adult teeth should not feel loose. Mobility may indicate advanced gum disease or bone loss.

8_Broken Tooth

Severe Damage

A tooth that is badly broken, cracked, or structurally weakened may not be restorable.

Dentist Note

You’re not losing your smile! Many people try to hold onto a painful tooth for too long because they feel nervous about extraction and what happens to its empty space.

The reality is that modern dentistry has changed a lot. If a tooth needs to come out because of severe damage or infection, there are several ways to replace it afterward. Many patients eventually tell us they wish they had treated the problem sooner because they spent months living with unnecessary pain and stress.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction may be the best solution to relieve pain, treat infection, or protect your oral health. Here are the most common reasons patients need an extraction.

The type of extraction needed depends on the condition and position of your tooth. We’ll assess your situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Types of Tooth Extractions

Simple Tooth Extraction

The dentist performs a simple tooth removal when the tooth is visible above the gumline and can be removed using standard dental instruments. This type of extraction is usually simple and often completed in a relatively short appointment.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

This procedure is most commonly used for impacted wisdom teeth that are trapped beneath the gum. The dentist carefully opens the gum to remove the tooth while protecting the surrounding area, using modern techniques and anesthesia to keep you comfortable.

What to Expect During Your
Tooth Extraction

Many patients feel nervous about extractions because they’re unsure what to expect. Our team will guide you through every step to ensure a comfortable experience.

Examination & X-Rays

Examination & X-Rays We begin with a dental exam and X-rays to assess the tooth and plan the safest treatment.

26_Anesthesia
Local Anesthesia

The area is fully numbed before treatment. You may feel slight pressure, but the procedure should not be painful. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.

Once numb, the tooth is gently loosened and removed. Most extractions are completed quickly and comfortably.

Before you leave, we’ll provide clear guidance on healing, pain management, eating, and recovery to help ensure a smooth healing process.

Is Tooth Extraction Painful?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and fortunately, modern dentistry has made tooth extractions much more comfortable than many people imagine. Local anesthesia keeps the area numb during treatment, so while you may feel movement or pressure, you don’t feel sharp pain. Patients who feel nervous about dental procedures can also discuss sedation options available for additional comfort.
Some soreness during recovery is completely normal, especially during the first couple of days. However, even with a little discomfort, it’s all worth it as we hear from our patients that the relief afterward feels better than continuing to live with ongoing severe tooth pain or infection.

Tooth Extraction Recovery and Healing

Recovery is usually smooth when aftercare instructions are followed.

First 24 Hours

Rest, protect the blood clot, and avoid smoking, straws, or vigorous rinsing.

Managing Swelling

Mild swelling is normal and can be reduced with an ice pack.

Eating After Extraction

Choose soft foods and avoid hard, crunchy, or hot foods during early healing.

Healing Timeline

Most patients feel better within a few days, while complete healing may take several weeks.

I had a wonderful experience at Kawartha Dental Clinic. Dr. Ed and his assistant Terry were fantastic, and Patrick the hygienist was excellent.

I tend to be quiet and don’t always voice my questions or concerns, but the team was thoughtful and perceptive. They paid attention, picked up on what I needed, and met me where I was—while remaining warm, upbeat, and professional. I felt genuinely seen and cared for throughout my visit.

One of the best dental experiences I’ve had. I’m actually looking forward to my next check-up.

Highly recommend.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How do I know if I need a tooth extraction?

You may need an extraction if you have severe pain, swelling, infection, advanced decay, or a tooth that cannot be repaired properly. A dental examination and X-rays are the best way to confirm the right treatment.

Modern anesthesia keeps the procedure comfortable. Most patients mainly feel pressure rather than pain during treatment.

Initial healing often takes several days, although complete healing beneath the gums can take longer depending on the extraction.

Yes, but soft foods are recommended during the first stage of healing. It’s best to avoid crunchy or hard foods until the area improves.

Avoid smoking, drinking through straws, vigorous rinsing, and hard foods during the early healing period, since these can interfere with recovery.

Depending on your oral health and goals, your options can be dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Our team can discuss replacement choices after healing.
