Dental Exams & X-Rays

Eligible diagnostic services may include complete exams, recall exams, emergency exams, and dental X-rays.

Dental Cleanings & Preventive Care

Preventive and periodontal services that are eligible include scaling, polishing, fluoride, dental sealants and gum care. 

Dental Fillings

Everyday restorative work, including dental fillings may be covered when it meets program requirements.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal (endodontic) treatment will be covered when the tooth and the proposed treatment meet NIHB's criteria.

Dental Crowns

Certain medically necessary dental crowns may be covered when NIHB eligibility and predetermination requirements are met.

Tooth Extractions

Oral surgery, including many tooth extractions will be eligible for coverage.

Dentures

Eligible denture services may include complete and partial dentures, as well as repairs, relines, and rebases, subject to NIHB frequency limits and predetermination requirements.

NIHB doesn’t cover dental implants and implant-related procedures, bridges, veneers, teeth whitening and other cosmetic treatment, inlays and onlays, night guards and bruxism appliances, sport mouth guards, crown lengthening, and bone grafting. Kawartha Dental Clinic offers several of these treatments as well. If your care includes something NIHB doesn’t cover, our team will explore if you have another option, and will explain the costs of your desired treatment before beginning.

Does NIHB Cover Sedation Dentistry?

NIHB includes benefits for several levels of sedation and anesthesia when a patient’s circumstances meet the program’s criteria. Our team can look at your situation and let you know whether the option your dentist recommends is likely to qualify.

Nitrous Oxide & Minimal Sedation

NIHB’s minimal sedation benefit covers nitrous oxide, a single oral sedation, or certain combinations of the two. Eligible minimal-sedation codes don’t require predetermination, though frequency limits still apply.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation may be considered for patients who meet the program’s criteria, and it generally requires predetermination.

Deep Sedation & General Anesthesia

NIHB also has benefits for deep sedation and general anesthesia when eligibility is met. These usually require predetermination, along with clinical and frequency requirements.

Good to know:

For patients aged 12 and older, NIHB sets specific conditions for each level of sedation. For minimal sedation, that can include earlier treatment that wasn’t successful without it or a significant impairment; deeper levels have their own requirements.

Does Kawartha Dental Clinic accept NIHB?
If you’re a full-time student, you are automatically enrolled in the dental plan. Coverage often includes a significant portion of preventative and basic dental treatments during the plan year, which typically runs from September 1 to August 31.
We provide direct billing to eligible insurance providers. This means students usually do not have to pay the full treatment cost upfront and only pay the uncovered portion, if applicable.
